* Ritual Dance - how African spirituality survived through dance.

*Celebratory Expression - how carnival ,helped to liberate the body.

There is evidence of the African presence in London, England, from Roman times to the present day. We will walk along some of the most famous streets in the capital.

This Trail has come about as a result the extensive research conducted by the University College London (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/lbs/) on the Legacies of Slave-Ownership. This added to my obsession with discovering more about the substantial Black history that literally ran throughout the streets of London.

Taking place at London’s NOW Gallery in Greenwich Peninsula from 13 October-13 November 2022, The Satirists brings together six rising stars in the field of photography and film, including Bubi Canal, Leonard Suryajaya, Nyugen Smith, Thandiwe Muriu, Thy Tran and Stephen Tayo.

 

The show brings together a diverse body of work that challenges historical and culturally biased tropes and stereotypes by presenting an alternative world view. Using satire as a tool to wield a bold irreverence and flair that transcends archetypal social constructs, the artists are using the medium of photography to develop new dialogues within the society.

Longo Dance of Anchoring is a sacred healing dance that draws its roots from three traditional initiation dance of the people Bantu (Congo). In Lingala Longo means “anchor”. It is a practice that brings balance, harmonises energies in the body and creates a deep sense of rooting and belonging. In a Longo session, you will be connecting to your breath, your body, your lineage and Nature.

Jimi Famurewa is a British-Nigerian author, broadcaster and freelance journalist. His writing has appeared in the Guardian, Wired, GQ, Empire and Time Out London.

He is the chief restaurant critic for the Evening Standard, a regular guest judge on the BBC One series MasterChef and was also one of the judges on Channel 4’s The Great Cookbook Challenge with Jamie Oliver.

Jimi investigates the troublesome practice of 'farming' in which young Black Nigerians were sent to live with White British foster parents, examines historic interaction with the police, and reveals the friction between traditional Black African customs and the stresses of modern life in diaspora. This is a vivid new portrait of London, and of modern Britain.

Fungi and plants have been used by indigenous Africans for spiritual and community development for millennia. Several communities use these sacred plants in their rites of passage, initiation ceremonies and daily ritual.

There is a wealth of knowledge on the continent which can help people globally use psychedelics consciously and supercharge this already powerful experience.

Darren Le Baron will share his knowledge and experience through the lenses of ancient history and mythology. Darren is known for his Shroomshops and his extensive research on the indigenous usage of psychedelic plants used in ritual and ceremony on the African continent.

Patrice Naiambana is an African performing artist who has spent the last 30 years exploring African performance aesthetic alongside a successful career in theatre, TV and film. He has performed and toured internationally with companies including the Royal Shakespeare Company, Complicité, the Young Vic and the National Theatre, and has recenlty been seen in BBC's Death in Paradise and Channel 4's It's A Sin.

In this workshop, Patrice will explore the African performance aesthetic, approaching creative storytelling through music, movement and stories of resistance.

Diasporas Now and Reference Point 180 present “Performance Lates,” an event series exploring the power of storytelling through expanded performance. The first iteration features live performances by sound artist Nexcyia (Adam Dove), filmmaker and performance artist River Cao, and movement artist Chantel Foo, interwoven between a line-up of guest DJs Eres (Sere Zhang), Genesys (Rain and Paritos) and Toyé [SevenTimes].

The performances will coincide with a pop-up exhibition in the space, showcasing physical artworks that reference the immersive worlds behind each participating artist’s practice.

Brief: PRIM is a digital platform for storytelling and focus on making stories by African, Caribbean and Afro-Latinx fam available and readily accessible. It was born out of not seeing enough queer stories and generally stories of people of Black ancestry. The Monthly OKHA Bookclub seeks to analyse, educate and build community one tale at a time. For each session they will provide the read, have an exhibition by a queer + black artist and usually another component such as a panel discussion, author Q+A or screening.
