Following the sad news that the court case against Nestle, Hershey's and Cargill has been dropped for charges of human trafficking, we would like to hold a screening event focusing on the abusive practices of Food conglomerates world wide. Employees working in farms and factories to produces and manufacture chocolate are usually held under extractive third party arrangements which do not meet international standards for labor laws. By outsourcing production to the poorer halves of the world, large corporations like Hershey exploit the lax labor laws within Asia and Africa, to create large profit margins. These terrible regulations are the reason why men, women and children work themselves to the bone with little or no pay to farm and manufacture products which can be sold at small prices.

Join ROMILDAMOR us on the 17th of August, 2022 at CFC Underwriting to watch an insightful documentary into human trafficking practices, and get to listen to an address from prominent figures in the Human Trafficking Abolition movement. These will be followed by a QnA as well snacks and refreshments.

Boro (more accurately ‘Boro boro’), meaning ‘rags or tatters’ is the art of repairing fabric using scraps and stitching. A source of shame in Japan for many years, the fabrics are now highly prized and can fetch significant sums. Boro work follows the British wartime tradition of ‘make do and mend’ but was used out of necessity in Japan to prolong the life of clothes and bedding due to extreme poverty and the scarcity of textiles.

In this class you will learn:

  • The history and origins of Boro. Examples of vintage Boro collected in Japan by the tutor will be shown
  • Traditional Japanese stitches and their uses
  • How to use sashiko stitching to enhance your work
  • Practice using visible repair to enhance and strengthen textiles
  • Applique and reverse applique techniques will be shown

Reiki is an ancient energy healing from Japan which channels the life force energy to heal every aspect of you mind, body and spirit. Reiki teaches that there are seven chakras within our bodies, the crown, the third eye, the throat, the heart, the solar plexus, the sacral and the root. When any one of these chakras become blocked with stagnant energy it can cause a whole host of physical and emotional symptoms. The reiki healing allows this energy to unblock, allowing you to speak your truth, expressing yourself and opens your heart after any heart break, grief or loss. You may feel these negative emotions which we have been taught to bury come up, if you do it is important to let the body do what it needs to do to heal and to let go, for your greatest good.

So join certified Reiki healer Lois for an evening of deep relaxation, as you lay down and listen to the deep soothing sounds of the gong.

107. Mon 29.08.22 * R.F. Kuang in conversation with Saara El-Arifi at Waterstones Piccadilly

Date: 29.08.22 * Time: 18.30 - 20.20pm * Location: Waterstones, 203-206 Piccadilly, London W1J 9HD * Host: Waterstones * RSVP: here

Join R.F. Kuang, as she celebrates the publication of a new dark academic fantasy Babel

Saara El-Arifi is an adult fantasy author whose debut novel 'The Final Strife' will be published in June 2022. Saara El-Arifi's heritage is intrinsically linked to the themes she explores in her writing. She was raised in the Middle East until her formative years, when her family swapped the Abu Dhabi desert for the English Peak District hills. The Final Strife is Saara El-Arifi's debut novel, the first part of a trilogy inspired by Ghanaian folklore and Arabian myths.

Join R.F. Kuang, the New York Times bestselling author of The Poppy War, as she celebrates the publication of a new dark academic fantasy Babel. One of the leading lights in the visceral grimdark fantasy genre, Kuang's stunningly wrought novel is a compulsive dystopia about the power of language and the evils of authoritarianism, represented by the looming titular tower of translation. R F Kuang will be in conversation with fellow author Saara El-Arifi.

Highlights include the Maharajah’s velvet Indian Jacket, his Purdey shotgun with which he shot thousands of game at his Elveden Shooting parties with the Prince of Wales, textiles and wearing apparel of the Princesses, the family ’s photograph albums and personal intimate letters.
